How Timeshares Work

The premise is a simple one, when you buy timeshare sales you are buying time - the right to use a particular resort during a particular time period. Of course there are many choices to be made within that premise. A timeshare may or may not be a good purchase for you to begin with. If you vacation occasionally, meaning every five years or so, then owning a timeshare may not be a good idea. But if you vacation every year, after about 10 years you'll begin to see your resort ownership pay off. If you're not prepared to own a timeshare for that long, consider renting one instead.

If vacation ownership is for you, however, there are several other questions you should answer including:

--   Fixed or floating? A fixed week guarantees you vacation time during the same week number each year. A floating week gives you the right to use a week during a particular season.
--  Studio, 1-bedroom, lockout? Even if it's only the two of you vacationing, you may want to consider owning a 2-bedroom, or larger, lockout. If you want to trade you'll have more power and if you use ½ of your lockout, some resorts will allow you to use it two times a year.
-- Location, location location. Yes, even in vacation ownership it matters. Let's say you own in Orlando during school vacation week and want to trade for Vail during ski season - the likelihood that you'll get your trade is high. If, however, you own in Myrtle Beach during August and want to trade for Orlando during school vacation week - you probably won't get that trade. Like trades for like.
-- How much do you really know about Texas timesharing? If the answer is little to nothing - start surfing the Internet for blogs and forums that will give you a good base knowledge of how they work before you start talking with sales people.

Lastly, don't be scared off. Timeshare resorts have provided thousands of people fantastic vacations year after year. But if you're still unsure, you can always stick with a company that has a well-established brand, like Silverleaf Timeshare.. That way you can find plenty of owner feedback online.

One way to save money on your purchase is to go through a reseller. These companies put owners who are selling timeshares in touch with people who want to buy. Because timeshares depreciate, purchasing this way can save you as much as 50% off original prices.

For the right person, timeshares can be a great way to buy your future vacations at today's prices.

Enjoy a beach vacation with a Galveston timeshare right on the Gulf of Mexico. Or maybe a San Antonio timeshare right in the heart of all the action is for you. The sky's the limit in Texas.
